End-of-year parties in Wollongong split neatly by headcount. A whole workplace needs a room that can take hundreds with its own bar; a team of twenty wants somewhere private enough for a few speeches without hiring a hall. Settle the headcount before you shortlist, because it rules out half the rooms straight away.
For the big end, The Groundz on the old Dapto showground can hand over its whole Tap House to 650 guests, and Central Hotel Shellharbour has an events centre for 350 with a heated upstairs deck looking over the lake. Scarlett's @ Illawarra Steelers Club takes 220 in the middle of the city, and The Auditorium @ Kiama Leagues Club seats 180 at long tables with shared platters from $25 per person.
Smaller teams have a different shortlist. Hilda's Bar @ The Illawarra Hotel is a private bar room with booths and a pool table for up to 50, North Beach Pavilion serves share feasts to groups of 10 to 48 in the old bathers pavilion, and Bóveda in Thirroul hosts canapé nights in a converted bank vault.
Ways to shape the day:
Photo booths from Diamond Booth Co and Showtime Photobooth & Event Hire give the night something to share in January, and Circus Monoxide can add roving jugglers and stilt walkers between courses. For a lighter afternoon, browse Wollongong activities or book a DJ for the party.

The Groundz at Dapto takes up to 650 across its whole Tap House, Anita's Theatre in Thirroul holds 800 standing, The Pavilion Kiama seats 240, and Central Hotel Shellharbour's events centre holds 350 cocktail style.
Hilda's Bar inside The Illawarra Hotel is a private room for 20 to 50 with booth seating and its own bar. North Beach Pavilion takes groups of 10 to 48 for share-style feasts, and Bóveda in Thirroul runs canapé parties for up to 100.
Barefoot bowls at Gerringong Bowlo starts from $15 per person, and Towradgi Park Bowls and Recreation Club also runs barefoot bowls parties with a function space and set menus afterwards.
The Chalkboard Bus has three party buses, one taking 44 seated and 25 standing, with sound, lights and eskies for BYO drinks. Hire starts from $1,350 and the buses travel across the Illawarra.
Dine In cooks banquets, canapés and plated dinners on site from $28 per person, and Culinarius serves cocktail food, grazing tables, roasts and seafood from $58 per person, with RSA-trained bar staff.
AMPT DJ Australia shapes the set around the ages in the room and takes must-play and do-not-play lists. Mark Dabin Music plays acoustic guitar and vocals from a list of more than 400 covers, from $700.
Circus Monoxide supplies aerialists, acrobats, jugglers and stilt walkers who roam among the guests. Q Strings plays as a trio, a violin and cello duet or a solo violin, and Ultimate DJs takes over for the dance floor with lighting and a microphone, from $800.
