About Vulcan Hotel

The Vulcan Hotel opened in 1894 as a pub serving the wool stores, wharves and ironworks of Ultimo, and after a refurbishment finished in 2002 it now runs as a boutique hotel inside the heritage-listed brick building. It is family-owned by Carole and Harvey Ord. For someone flying in for a wedding, a family birthday or a conference, it is a smaller, quieter alternative to a city tower, with continental breakfast included, a landscaped courtyard and Cafe Vulcan downstairs. Rooms run from the compact Shoebox King Single for one through Standard Queen and Standard Twin rooms of about 18 square metres, Superior Queen, Superior King and Superior Twin rooms (the Superior Twin has two queens), and an Executive Triple with a king and a single. Groups of up to four have a few options: the Superior Twin, the Balcony Suite 314 with two king beds and a private balcony looking over the city, and the 42 square metre Vulcan Loft, which has a queen, two singles, a kitchenette and a table for four. Every room is ensuited, with a smart TV and free wifi, and a 2006 wing added a lift to the upper floors. The hotel sits on Wattle Street near Broadway, the Powerhouse Museum and UTS, and describes Darling Harbour, ICC Sydney and Central Station as walking distance; Central is about 15 minutes on foot and has direct trains to the airport. Buses stop on Broadway and Harris Street. There is no car park on site, but guests get a negotiated rate at the UTS car park in Thomas Street.

Room rates are not listed on the website; they vary by date and are shown when you check availability on the hotel's booking page. Continental breakfast is included, with barista coffee extra. Parking at the UTS car park is $28 per 24 hours. A $50 card pre-authorisation is taken at check-in, or a $200 cash bond without a card. Extra beds carry a charge. A $200 cleaning fee applies for smoking in a room, plus any fire brigade call-out fine. Card surcharges are 1.5% for Visa and Mastercard.

Book direct on the hotel's website for its best rate, with discounts for stays of three, five and seven nights or more. Groups of more than 10 rooms pay a 50% deposit when booking.

Check-in is from 2pm and check-out is by 10am; early arrival or late departure can be requested and may cost extra. Reception is open 7am to 10pm with a night manager on site. Continental breakfast is served at Cafe Vulcan from 7:30am, until 10am on weekdays and 11am on weekends, and happy hour runs 5pm to 7pm. Wifi is free, luggage can be stored before and after your stay, same-day laundry is available for a fee, and housekeeping is on request. Cots and extra beds can be arranged. The hotel is non-smoking, pets are not allowed except service animals, it has a no-party policy, and guests must be 18 or older to book.

How far is the Vulcan Hotel from Central Station and the airport?

Central Station is roughly a 15-minute walk. From the airport, the train to Central takes about 10 minutes, or a taxi or rideshare takes around 30 to 40 minutes. The hotel does not run its own airport shuttle.

What if we arrive after reception closes?

Reception is staffed from 7am to 10pm. If you land later, let the hotel know in advance; a night manager is on site and can be reached on the number posted at the front door, and your room key opens the Level 1 Guest Entry at any hour.

Where do guests park?

At the UTS car park in Thomas Street (Building 10), where hotel guests pay $28 per 24 hours. Spaces cannot be reserved when you book, the height limit is 2.15 metres, and reception holds after-hours access cards.

Which room suits a family of four?

The Vulcan Loft sleeps four in a queen and two single beds and adds a kitchenette and dining table. The Superior Twin has two queen beds, and the Balcony Suite 314 has two king beds and its own balcony. Baby cots can be requested.

Can we book a block of rooms for wedding guests?

Yes. The hotel's terms cover group bookings: for more than 10 rooms, a 50% deposit on the rooms is taken when the booking is made. Contact the hotel on 02 9211 3283 to set it up.
