How to Choose Go Kart Racing

Northmead is a short drive from Parramatta, and it is where PowerPlay Northmead runs electric go-karts on a two-storey indoor circuit of about 200 metres. The lap is broken up by ramps, a bridge and a tunnel, and the surface is kept slightly slick on purpose so drivers can slide through the corners. Because the karts are electric there are no exhaust fumes, and the building is air-conditioned, so a race here feels the same in January heat or a wet July. The chain was started by Glenn Macneall, a former World Rally co-driver, and its adult group packages give you exclusive use of the track.

How a group race works:

Getting there: the venue is in a unit on Redbank Road, a short drive from Parramatta, in a part of Sydney where driving and parking are far easier than in the city.
The experience: the Mini-Play format for up to eight racers is a 15-lap qualifying run then an 18-lap race from a grid start, and larger packages add practice and a final split into winners and losers.
Group size: eight karts run at once, so bigger groups race in heats, and groups over 24 get a tailored quote.
Booking lead time: group slots are limited on Friday evenings, weekends and school holidays, so book those times early.
Food and drinks: there is no in-house catering, so bring platters or order food in for the private function zone.

Prices start from $37 per person. Every package includes a balaclava for each driver, a private safety briefing and a function zone with tables, kept apart from the spectator area. Drivers must be at least 10 years old, 140 cm or taller and under 120 kg, and enclosed shoes are compulsory. Kids birthday packages cover ages 10 to 15 and include an hour in a party zone after racing. Costumes are fine for hens and bucks as long as nothing hangs over the side of the kart.
