About Caravan Dance Company
Based in Leura, in the Blue Mountains, Caravan Dance Company is a troupe dancing modern fusion bellydance. Devi Mamak founded it in 2000, and until recently it went by the name Ghawazi Caravan. Its style, also called tribal bellydance, rests on Middle Eastern dance and draws in East Indian, North African, flamenco and contemporary movement. At a Mountains wedding, hen's night, birthday or company function, the troupe brings colour, costume and theatre. Bookings range from a short duet that slips between courses, through a lively festival-style set, to a fully staged show with live musicians. Group pieces use FCBD Style, where dancers take cues from one another and build the dance on the spot. For live music, the Caravan Band, led by Devi Mamak, is a fusion ensemble with sitar and piano, saxophone and ney, Egyptian tabla, darabuka, bass and drum kit. The company also dances at street festivals, community events and its own theatre shows. A weekly bellydance class runs in Leura on Tuesday evenings. The dancers include Devi Mamak, Laura Kelly, Sara Arrell, April Erzetich, Diane Vogt, Cristie Fuller and Catherine O'Brien, several of whom have been with the company since its early years. Between them they have trained in ballet, jazz, flamenco, Odissi and Middle Eastern styles. Prices aren't published, so enquire with the date and location for a quote.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Caravan Dance Company based?
The troupe is based in Leura in the Blue Mountains, where a weekly class also runs. It performs at weddings, parties, corporate events and festivals around the Mountains, and travels further by arrangement.
What style of dance do they perform?
Modern fusion bellydance, sometimes known as tribal bellydance. It is grounded in Middle Eastern dance, with East Indian, North African, flamenco and contemporary influences, and is presented theatrically in elaborate costume.
How many dancers will perform, and for how long?
That depends on the format. A duet suits a dinner or smaller room, a festival-style set brings more energy, and a staged show can feature the wider troupe, with numbers and length agreed when you book.
Can they perform with live musicians?
Yes. Devi Mamak leads the Caravan Band, which pairs sitar and piano with saxophone, ney, Egyptian tabla, darabuka, bass and drum kit. Shows can run to the band or to recorded music.
How much does a booking cost?
No set prices are published. The quote depends on the format, the date, how long the performance runs and the travel involved, so include the date and venue in your enquiry.
