About High and Wild

High and Wild is a Katoomba adventure company that has guided abseiling, canyoning, rock climbing and bush survival trips in the Blue Mountains National Park for more than 30 years. Its office sits inside the YHA on Katoomba Street, where groups meet, get fitted with gear and leave their bags before heading out. Guides hold canyoning, first aid and lifesaving qualifications. Trips cover every level, from a half-day abseil to hard technical canyons for experienced groups. Private groups are a big part of the business, with bucks and hens parties, workmates and social clubs all catered for. The half-day abseil is a common pick for bigger groups, building from a short practice drop through a 15-metre cliff to a 30-metre overhang. Groups with a full day often choose Empress Canyon. A morning of abseil training leads into an afternoon of jumps and slides that ends with a waterfall abseil into a deep pool. Team-building days are shaped around your staff, from a short abseil outing to an overnight bush survival challenge, with gear, catering and transport included. Anyone who would rather not take part can act as photographer or cheer squad. Full-day trips include harnesses, wetsuits and waterproof packs, transport from the office, a lunch chosen from a menu at booking and a waterproof camera for the group. Canyoning is for ages 14 and up, group abseiling and climbing take participants from 10, and under-18s need a guardian's signed waiver. Send an enquiry to book a private trip for your group.

Frequently asked questions

Do you take private bucks and hens groups?

Yes. Private trips are run for bucks and hens parties as well as workmates and social clubs, and trips that are not on the schedule can often be arranged on request.

How much does a trip cost?

The half-day abseil is $210 per person, full-day rock climbing is $340 and Empress Canyon starts from $345 per person. Prices include gear and guiding, and there are no credit card fees.

What are the minimum ages?

Canyoning trips take ages 14 and up, while group abseiling and rock climbing start at 10. Anyone under 18 needs a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian before the trip.

What should we wear and bring?

Running or hiking shoes, layers that suit the forecast and a water bottle are the basics. For summer canyoning, arrive with swimwear under your clothes and shoes that can get wet, as wetsuits are fitted at the office.

What happens if it rains?

Abseiling, canyoning and survival trips still go ahead in light rain, but rock climbing needs fine weather. The decision is made on the morning, and trips the guides call off are refunded or rescheduled.

Another awesome day out with Brian and Zol doing Tiger Snake Canyon this time. There were some pretty tough spots but we felt safe and well supported. A shout out to the lunch caterers too... Always delicious!
